What is the most fuel efficient family vehicle?

I am trying to research for a new used vehicle. I would LOVE a minivan, but all seem to be very bad on gas mileage. I already have a family of 4 and am looking for that number to be more within a couple of years, which I would like to still have the same vehicle at that time for financial reasons. I do not want a hybrid, too expensive to maintain and fix, but something safe is definately important. Thanks!

try to look at toyota sienna they are great on gas mileage!

  2. Hybrids are not expensive to maintain, and the only thing that will be expensive to fix is the battery pack when that wears out. And some hybrids don’t even NEED the battery pack to keep running.

The most efficient options ARE hybrids.

A Prius or Civic hybrid might work if your kids aren’t fully grown. A non-hybrid Civic or Corolla/Matrix would be alright, too.

A first generation (2006 and earlier) Scion xB would work so long as you don’t need to haul a lot of cargo AND the kids simultaneously (or if you have a non-folding stroller). The rear passenger room is AMAZING for a car that small, it has very good crashworthiness for a car its size, and handles well so as to not need as much crash protection. The problem is, with the rear seats up, its cargo area is no bigger than the trunk of your typical sedan. If that’s alright, the xB is your best non-hybrid option. They sell for a lot, used, though. They only seat 5, though, and I’d hate to be an older kid with two child seats in it, though, so take your timing into consideration.

The new BMW diesels that are allegedly coming any year now to the US are up there with the hybrids (of comparable size) though. Mid-high 30s on the highway in a big car. (IIRC that’s for the 5 series diesel)

If you need more space, you’re going to have to get a minivan, and you’re just going to have to accept that they don’t get very good fuel economy. (Still better than a large SUV, though, and they’re still safer)

  3. I have done research on this myself and have found that the 95-98 Honda Odyssey is really good.

This is the first gen Minivan for honda, but it is more reliable than the next gen (Lots of transmission issues)

The fuel economy is aout 25MPG(avg)

The Odyssey was Wheels magazine’s Car of the Year for 1995

  7. I drove a Mazda 5 for a rental vehicle that I absolutely loved…although it didn’t get the best mileage, it was defiently more than the average van. And I could drive it!!! (I’m small, so I can’t drive big cars…lol).

I’d look into a Toyota Yaris as well. Not only are they fairly cheap for a new vehicle, they get good gas mileage and their hatchbacks could hold a family of 4 easily.

FYI, the Mazda 5 gets about 22 miles per gallon in the city and 28 or so on the highway. The one I drove had enough seats for 9 people….they start at 18000 for new.
